SUMMARY:Creating Opportunities for Social Equity in NY Cannabis Cultivation
DESCRIPTION:  \nAlthough the agricultural economy has grown\, the share of Black farmers in the United States has declined over the last century. Today\, just 1.4 percent of farmers identify as Black or mixed race compared with about 14 percent 100 years ago. Federal programs and policies that excluded Blacks from land purchases were passed prior to passage of the 14th Amendment\, the absence of legal protections such as wills that could have facilitated transfer of property to the next generation\, and limited access to capital through discriminatory lending practices have all contributed to this decline. Taken together\, the inability of Black Americans to fully participate in the land market has resulted in a lost opportunity for generational wealth creation. \nWe must increase representation of Black and traditional market cultivators in cannabis farming. To do so\, we must address issues of land access\, resource availability\, and incubators for social equity in cultivation. Addressing these opportunities could generate measurable economic and social value. \nJoin NYSF and partners in discussing what framework\, resources\, policies\, and practices are need to address the inequity in the agricultural sector and how to create viable and level pathways for those populations who have been historically underrepresented in U.S. cultivation (BIPOC\, women\, and LGBTQIA + communities). \nThere will be talks on NY Cannabis cultivation\, budtender training\, plant science training and fun interactive exhibits on homegrow and other cultivation topics. Meet licensed farmers\, traditional market growers\, and movers and shakers in the new industry! \n  \nPlease come out to Brooklyn and support this dialogue. If you would like to table at the event please DM us we still have some space. Please help us promote this important topic!

SUMMARY:NYCTC Cannabis Career Fair at Rise Radio #10
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an eventful and informative evening. Registration and RSVP are mandatory for this event. MENU AND BAR PROVIDED BY RISE RADIO. Space is limited. \n\n\nNew York State is LEGAL! \nThe work\, supported in part by a state budget appropriation\, prioritizes diversity\, equity\, and quality jobs in the emerging cannabis industry through skills training\, entrepreneurism services\, workforce supports\, legal education for employees and employers\, and the development of high-road career pathways. \nAfter years of advocacy\, New York State has passed legislation that will lead to a statewide market for adult-use cannabis. The legislation—known as the Marihuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MRTA)—has wide-reaching implications for workforce development programs and policy. Among them\, MRTA prioritizes those harmed by the prohibition of cannabis by establishing a goal to award 50% of business licenses to social equity candidates. \nThis goal puts New York at or near the head of the pack in terms of state-level\, restorative justice cannabis policy. \n

SUMMARY:Saving Black Land with Cannabis: The Rise of 40 Acre Co-op
DESCRIPTION:Black farmers in the United States have always faced a long uphill battle to make a living from farming and to hold onto their land. They have faced well documented discrimination by government agencies\, banks\, and physical violence from white supremacists. Systemic racism and the corporate consolidation of agriculture has resulted in a 95 percent reduction in the number of Black farmers since 1920. In 1920\, Black farmers made up 14% of all farmers in the US\, almost 1 million strong. Today\, Black farmers in the US number barely 46\,000\, just 1.3% of all US farmers. As you read this\, the Justice for Black Farmers Act\, drafted to remedy a legacy of racial injustice against Black farmers\, has been reintroduced for consideration by congress for a third time. \nForty Acre Co-op was born in 2019 in order to help Black farmers hold onto their land and take advantage of the new\, and growing\, legal market for Cannabis. It is the first national cooperative of Black farmers in the United States since the Colored Farmers’ National Alliance and Cooperative Union of the late 1800s. Forty Acre Co-op is supporting Black farmers grow high-CBD hemp in order to get a higher value product\, access markets\, raise the average income of Black farmers\, recover Black land\, and build generational wealth. They do this by pooling resources to access markets and supplies at a lower cost; helping obtain grower and processor licenses; and running a Hemp Incubator Program that provides support and mentoring for farmers from seed to shelf. \nJoin farmer members and staff of Forty Acre Co-op in conversation about their successes and challenges building a national cooperative of Black farmers in the US and creating a space for Black farmers in the growing cannabis industry. \nThis is part of a series of public conversations hosted by Collective Diaspora profiling Black cooperatives throughout the African diaspora. \nCollective Diaspora \nCollective Diaspora is a new membership-based organization of Black cooperatives and Black-led cooperative support groups across the African diaspora. We have come together to build a global Black solidarity economy. By deepening our connections with each other we make our cooperatives\, organizations\, and communities stronger and more resilient\, building a global Black economy based on solidarity instead of exploitation.
