SUMMARY:Changes in Federal Approaches to Cannabis: Process and Impact
DESCRIPTION:In 1971\, marijuana was designated as a Schedule I drug\, meaning that it “has a high potential for abuse\, no currently accepted medical use in treatment\, and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision”. After decades-long efforts\, President Biden announced in October 2022 that he instructed “the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Attorney General to initiate the administrative process to review how marijuana is scheduled under federal law.” In January 2023\, the FDA stated that a new regulatory pathway for CBD is needed that balances individuals’ desire for access to CBD products with the regulatory oversight needed to manage risks. Although these actions suggest that the federal government is shifting its approach to cannabis\, the mechanics of the scheduling review and the implications of such shift are not well understood. \nPlease join the Drug Enforcement and Policy Center for a two-part event to discuss the process and implications of marijuana scheduling review. A panel of experts will discuss the role of other federal agencies in the scheduling review process and the legal implications of marijuana’s status as a controlled substance and the potential impact of rescheduling marijuana or descheduling it entirely. The panel will consider impacts on criminalization\, research\, medical access\, and the medical and adult use cannabis industries currently regulated by states. \n12:00 – 12:30 – Presentation \n12:30 – 2:00 – Panel discussion

SUMMARY:Federal Cannabis Policy Crash Course
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 10th from 9:30am to 1:30pm at the historic Boston Public Library for Parabola Center’s debut crash course on federal legalization. \nIf the national legalization of marijuana is indeed inevitable in America\, then it’s time to ask the next question: Who gets to write those laws\, and who will benefit? \nAlready\, aspiring weed billionaires and powerful corporations like Amazon and Altria (aka Philip Morris) are hounding Congress to pass bills that would let them be the first to profit from federal legalization— leaving behind small business owners and the many communities that were torn apart by decades of overpolicing. \nIt’s time to fight back. Parabola Center is bringing together a group of the country’s top drug policy experts to dissect the current political landscape and chart a better course toward comprehensive federal cannabis reform that centers all of us\, not Wall Street gamblers. \nCome ready to hear from small business owners\, lifelong advocates\, and policymakers at this half-day crash course. You’ll leave with a toolkit that will empower you to take action and make a difference in the coming fight to legalize marijuana the right way. \nThis event is open to the public. Tickets are $10 to cover the cost of the venue. All tickets must be purchased in advance and cannot be purchased at the door. Food is not provided. \nWant to co-host this event? Reach out to info@parabolacenter.com to learn more.
